Overview

This course introduces the state-of-the-art imaging technologies of Spectral and Polarimetric Imaging for target detection, including the imaging principles, the properties of the image data obtained and how to process them effectively. Both the opportunities and challenges of utilizing the new technologies are presented with applications. No background knowledge is assumed for the course. Attendees receive a comprehensive set of notes and a copy of Remote Sensing Digital Image Analysis, by John Richards, Springer, 2013.

Facilitator

Scott Tyo

Professor J. Scott Tyo is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Head of the School of Engineering and IT at UNSW Canberra.  He directs the Advanced Sensing Laboratory, which develops novel optical and electromagnetic imaging and sensing systems, including polarimetry, hyperspectral imaging, coherence sensing, infrared imaging, and terhahertz sensing.  Prof. Tyo is best known for his work in optical polarization imaging, where he has made significant contributions in many areas, especially in polarimeter design, optimization, and calibration.  He was recognized as the 2014 SPIE GG Stokes Award winner for his work with integrated imaging polarimeters.  He is a fellow of the IEEE, SPIE, and the Optical Society of America

Xiuping Jia

Associate Professor Xiuping Jia is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering and IT at UNSW Canberra. She has more than 25 years of teaching experience in higher education in Australia. She has offered remote sensing and image processing courses many times to undergraduate and postgraduate students. These courses are closely related to her active research area. She is well known for her work in hyperspectral remote sensing, including data correction, multisensor fusion and image classification. Dr. Jia has co-authored the remote sensing textbook Remote Sensing Digital Image Analysis [Springer-Verlag, 3rd (1999) and 4th (2006) editions]. She is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing since 2005.
