The Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL) is an organisation which promotes the study and creation of Australian literature and Australian literary culture. It was founded in 1978; members of the first executive committee were Mary Lord (President), Barry Andrews (Vice President), Ken Stewart (Secretary) and Julian Croft (Treasurer). The first conference was held at Monash University at which its constitution was adopted. In 1982, ASAL merged with the Australian Literature Society (founded 1899).
The Association hosts conferences, annually since 1982. The location shifts each year, allowing the ASAL to feature the literatures of diverse parts of Australia. The conferences are also informal and social, featuring the Frank Moorhouse Perpetual Trophy for Ballroom Dancing, a parody night, and performances of theatre and poetry.
ASAL administers several significant literary awards. These include the ALS Gold Medal (since 1982); AD Hope Prize; Walter McRae Russell Award; Magarey Medal for Biography; and the AA Phillips Award.
From 1978 – 2000, ASAL published the newsletter Notes & Furphies, initially twice a year and later annually. Notes & Furphies offered information on Australian literary and cultural history, amusing anecdotes and a means by which to report the events of the annual ASAL conferences. Since 1994, ASAL conference proceedings began to be formally published. Since 2002, the proceedings are published as Journal of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature (JASAL).
Association members have also contributed to publications including the Oxford Literary Guide to Australia (1987, revised 1993) and the Macquarie Dictionary of Australian Quotations (1990).

Records of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature, Special Collections, UNSW Canberra, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra, MSS 328, Box [Number], Folder [Number].
The collection was donated by the Association for the Study of Australian Literature and its members in 14 consignments between 1993 and 2007.
The archive was transferred in separate consignments from different members of the ASAL Executive who each had their own methods of storing and holding records. To preserve the original groupings of records, the archive has been arranged roughly by chronology. Records compiled by individual creators have been kept together, where possible, while distinct subject files are co-located in a separate sequence. Published material, including the collection of Notes & Furphies issues, were placed together and can be found at the end of the finding aid.
Special Collections holds the Papers of Michael Denholm at MSS 35 and Andrew Sant at MSS 31.
