The papers of John Jenkins contains a range of material documenting the broad spectrum of Jenkins' career, including correspondence, literary and music manuscripts, posters, computer discs, audio and video cassettes and photographs and slides. There are also drafts of articles, criticisms, book reviews and short stories, together with working notes and drafts of poems written in collaboration with Ken Bolton.

John Jenkins was born 9 November 1949 in Melbourne, Victoria. He was educated at Burwood Technical School and Box Hill High School, and studied Business at the Swinburne Institute of Technology. Jenkins works as a writer, journalist, editor and teacher.

Jenkins was associated with the rise of the 'New Australian Poetry' and the small magazines that accompanied it. He edited the brief-lived A and Aardvark (1970); was co-editor with Walter Billeter of Etymspheres : the journal of the Paper Castle(1974-75), and with Rudi Krausmann of Aspect (1976-77), and associate editor of Helix (1981-82). He was involved with Billeter in Paper Castle Publications, with Robert Kenny in Rigmarole Publications, and co-edited with Michael Dugan The outback reader (1975). He was the founder and editor of Brunswick Hills Press, a small independent publisher of innovative new Australian writing (1984-1993).

He was one of the first poets to read at Melbourne's La Mama Theatre. He also combined music, dance, poetry performances with Margaret Norwood, Kim Bessant and friends. He has co-written books of poems with Ken Bolton, including their verse novel The Ferrara poems (1989), which was made into a 40 minute film.

Jenkins has received the following awards for his works:
James Joyce Foundation Suspended Sentence Award, 2004: winner for 'Under the shaded blossom'
Artsrush Poetry Prize, 2003: winner for 'Cold press'
FAW Christina Stead Award, 2003: shortlisted for A break in the weather.
