Australian poet and academic Julian Croft was born in Newcastle in 1941, graduating the University of New South Wales with a Bachelor of Arts in 1961. After working as a production assistant and a research assistant, Croft completed a Master of Arts and travelled in Europe and Africa. In 1970, he returned to Australia and took up a lectureship at the University of New England. He was subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer (1975), Associate Professor (1992) and elected to a chair in 1994.
